Desert In Bloom

There's nothing more extraordinary than seeing the desert burst into bloom, which is what G and I were lucky enough to witness in a little botanical garden just south of Santa Barbara the other day. I had originally intended to paint a different scene that day but while I waited for G to bring my canvas from the car I found myself being drawn up a little path to the left and as I turned to look back my eyes fell on this eye-popping landscape. The giant aloe trees towered above a scene saturated with colour, orange and yellow pokers bursting forth like fireworks from the desert floor, the magenta smoke bushes in the centre a perfect foil for their bright blooms. The entire scene seemed otherworldly, like a magical shangri-la, and what a joy it was to paint!
