These marigolds featured in two of my previous paintings, and I just can't get enough of painting these spectacular blooms! This field was grown specifically for the annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) holiday here in California, which is a joyous celebration of the lives of the departed. It's believed that the marigolds, with their vibrant orange color and sweet scent, help the dead find their way back to the living. It's such a lovely sentiment. Standing there sketching in the field, immersed in a sea of flowers, I found myself thinking about my own departed loved ones. It was strangely comforting and what a joy it was to paint!
