The Champagne Garden

This is the biggest canvas I have ever had and it was absolutely amazing to have so much space to paint on! G came across it in our local thrift store and knew he just had to have it for me. Initially I was at a loss for what to paint on such a colossal board but as I sat with the canvas in the garden the other day, my eyes drifting contentedly over all the shrubs and flowers we have planted, I felt compelled to just grab my pencil and begin sketching. Painting it has been like painting portraits of old friends: all the daisies and canna lilies, gerberas and geraniums, and while I was painting them I couldn't get the smile off my face! As for the title, my recent "In the Garden" series of paintings often features a bottle of Mumm champagne on the table and although there's no champagne bottle in this one I thought The Champagne Garden was a fitting title for a painting celebrating the beauty of the garden.
