The Pineapple And The Passion Fruit

The original sketch for this painting started off with a table in the center of the scene, in the vein of my Vase of Marigolds, but as I began to sketch the stone pineapple on the bottom left my eye was caught by the absolutely stunning passionfruit vine climbing up the fence beside it. Its leaves were singular in formation, its branches festooned with flowers, and one slowly-ripening passionfruit hung from the center, and I instantly knew that I had to include it in my painting. The only problem was that the vine would run straight through my sketch of the table! But after a brief moment of consideration the beauty of the vine trumped the table and I continued on with my sketch, going on to replace the table with the colorful carpet of flowers behind it in the garden. It was such fun improvising with my sketch and what a joy it was to paint!
